There has been of bumper crop of community support for the Lang Creek Native Plant Garden this past season.

Rotary Club Work Party – August 22nd, 2012

The Powell River Rotary Club held their weekly meeting at Lang Creek. Equipped with an arsenal of their favourite garden tools, 17 members set to work weeding out dandelions, alders, horsetails and a few blackberries from the garden beds. This hardy group also trimmed red aphid galls from the kinnikinnick, deadheaded the irises, and weed eated the surrounding area.

Following the work party, and a delicious BBQ dinner, PRSS Garden Steering Committee members Laura Johnson, Liz Kennedy, Gail Scholefield and Michael Stewart presented a report.  The team outlined the history of the garden project, explained the goal to develop a botanical learning centre to benefit students and visitors, and concluded by describing plans for future plantings, development of signage, and educational materials.

Rotarian’s then had the opportunity to peruse a display of  photos, reference materials and check out the new educational signage.

By way of a thank you, the club presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Friends of the Garden:

“In grateful recognition of your presentation to the Rotary Club of Powell River, we have made a donation to Polio Plus. Rotary International’s goal is to eradicate polio worldwide and with this donation, twenty children will be inoculated against this crippling disease.”

The gardeners thanked Rotary for their contributions to Lang Creek over the years, notably, the four beautiful picnic tables for the upper field, work on the bridge and new cement walkway.

Friends of the Garden Work Party – September 5, 2012

On a beautiful Wednesday morning, fourteen Friends of the Garden gathered to prune Nootka Roses and Flowering Red Currant, deadhead perennials, and weed the beds and Salmon Garden areas. Other tasks included the cleaning of the benches and signs. Because “many hands make light work”, the tidy up was quickly accomplished. The work party ended with a customary tailgate tea party, complete with seasonal fruit and home baking!

Other highlights of the season include :

Seedy Saturday – March 10, 2012

Friends of the Garden manned a Native Plant Garden informational display table at the Complex. The event was well attended.
