Water is essential

It is that time of the year again, for us to challenge students with a question about salmon.

After having hundreds of students out at Lang Creek to see and learn about salmon we are hoping that we have inspired them to think about this valuable resource. Our question  will allow students to explore many different aspects in the classroom- environmental, economic, recreation, scientific, etc.

Here is the question:

Water is essential for all living things. What can we do to sustain healthy, clean water for people and for salmon?

It’s important to keep garbage out of the water because salmon could drown if caught in it or eat it by mistake. We can help by keeping snack bags/litter in our pockets. By being “Stream keepers” and keeping our waterways clean.

We can keep our water clean by…
    -Picking up garbage around creeks.
-Not putting our hands in the water because you might have stuff on your hands ( hand cream, hand sanitizer, ect.)

Points about how to keep our creeks clean:
*pick up any garbage by the banks of streams
*make sure to recycle your recyclables
*dont dump your unwanted items anywhere
    *taking your garbage with you

It is important that the water in the creek is clean, because if it is not, then the fish won’t have a good and healthy life. There needs to be lots of bugs in the creek so they can eat. Garbage in the water can kill the bugs so the fish won’t have anything to eat. The fish I raised are healthy and live in the creek now. I always want to have healthy fish in the river to catch.

It is important for the creek to be healthy so Powell River people can catch more fish. This means commercial can catch the fish and sell them so the spawning channel will get more donated money to keep going. I am just learning to fish and I want there to still be fish for the future so we can catch them.

I say keep the water clean, because some of the bugs salmon prey on are not tolerant to dirty water. If they don’t have bugs, they have no food to eat. Don’t throw stuff like candy wrappers or snack bags in the river. Put this in your pocket and throw it away in the garbage when you get home.

I think it is important to keep the water healthy because when the spawners come up the river to lay their eggs there should be signs that say no gasoline vehicles allowed to go through the river. This keeps the water healthy. If they are laying their eggs, we cannot just walk by and throw garbage into the river or creek. If we do keep the water healthy, the eggs should live and the young salmon will swim out to the ocean. When they come back my dad and I can go fishing. When the fish come back up the river to spawn, they will lay more eggs and the cycle will keep on going. If we keep the water healthy, there will be good fishing for a long time.
