December 2018

The Salmon Preservation Fund. Save our Salmon!

We would like to wish everyone a happy new year. Our newsletter is being distributed as it was originally constructed in late December 2018.

There is some very disappointing news to report as an amendment to the December newsletter. Our hatchery at Duck Lake was compromised by trespassers some time around the 30th of December. The trespassers entered the closed hatchery gate and proceeded to pull standpipes and manipulate flows in a manner that reduced the level in our water distribution tower. This caused massive failure of our Chum incubation system.

The result was an estimated 90 percent mortality to our Chum that had been developed to the alevin stage.
We will see how many survive in the coming weeks.

We are now in the process of investigating what our options are for further ssecurity measures at our Duck Lake Hatchery.

Are there video cams at Duck Lake? I seem to recall that it has been vandalized before. This makes me so sad to think that someone would do such a thing.
