The Powell River Salmon Society Classroom Incubator Program focuses on salmon, biology and stewardship.  We encourage educators to integrate science with social studies.  Hands-on participation and the knowledge gained in salmon biology and environment are critical building blocks toward fostering a strong understanding of stewardship.

We encourage all students to respond on our blog to the following question:

What are some of the reasons salmon are important to our community? We are looking forward to your answers.

The Powell River Salmon Society would like to thank the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) for its support in 2011. All other dead egg picking is done manually and is carried out on a daily basis.

This machine is known as a Jensorter and makes use of a photocell that can tell weather or not the egg is transparent or opaque. The importance of the egg-picker can not be overstated. Our organization is responsible for more than 2 million eggs on an annual basis and this technology is vital in the success of this production.

I think some of you will find this short video link interesting.
With the primary incubation process well under way now at the Mill Hatchery we
have been shocking our egg production.

A mechanical shock is provided during a procedure where we siphon
the eggs into a bucket to break the membrane on any of the eggs that are not
fertilized (dead eggs). This procedure turns the egg white in color so that we
can identify it and remove it from the live eggs. It is important to remove the
dead eggs from the live eggs because fungus growth is greatly increased by the
presence of dead eggs and can reduce survival rates. Our survival rates to date
remain in the high nineties. Check it out!
